Whilst my mantra remains the same: just because it‘s in the shops, fashionable or on trend does not mean it will work for YOU and that’s OK!

Instead, I’ve done the hard work for you by searching and sharing what you can expect with tips on how to wear them.

These seasonal updates have been running for years now. Get some inspiration and guidance on updating your wardrobe. A new season is the perfect opportunity to reignite it after all!

This virtual event lasts around 90 minutes. You’ll learn the key colours, styles and trends this autumn and winter with a presentation I’ve prepared. Don’t worry – it’s not death by powerpoint as I’ll also share some of my top picks from the high street too.

Spring 2023 Spotlight trend: denim and how to wear it

If you’ve been shopping, you’ll have noticed new colours and styles for spring and summer. We just need the weather!

Whilst I shared this trend during my live workshop in April, One trend I wanted to spotlight this spring is denim and how to wear it.

Firstly, think beyond jeans! One of the biggest complaints I get from clients is how fed up they are of wearing jeans! This year, denim has been reinvented! Skirts, dresses, jackets, shirts and more. Different styles, cuts, patterns and washes. Try something different – like a denim dress!

In this video, I’m sharing a denim dress which totally ticks the spring 2023 trend:

Watch it here on YouTube.

Would it surprise you to learn that this was a charity shop find? (Wakefield Hospice, The Ridings Shopping Centre, Wakefield).

It’s totally ‘on trend’ right??

Which proves the point I’m always making. Trends come and go. Be sure to check your wardrobe for something similar to the latest trends (in which case; get it worn!). Charity shops can be a great place to shop!

Here’s three considerations when shopping for denim:

1. Think about your style personality

Naturals like me, can be drawn to the ease and simplicity of denim. But, do think outside the box and try it on for ease of movement. Denim nowadays is more modern and there are different weights of denim fabric too. The dress I’ve highlighted is a much lighter weight fabric and it has pockets! Go for something that works for your style personality. For example, romantics will be drawn to embroidery, lace or jewel embellishment details. The Classics will prefer a plain item so try something like a smart denim jacket. There’s coloured and traditional denim in the shops in abundance too.

2. Think about your colouring

The lighter wash of the denim dress mans it’s perfect for lights and softs. It will work for warms (you’re best ‘warming up’ your denim and neutrals or look for a colour such as a khaki denim jacket which will give you versatility). Cools, clears and deeps will be better suited to a darker wash.

3. Think about your body shape

Denim is a structured fabric and has a tendency to sit off curves. This dress has a waistband sewn in to provide some shape and darts to create shape. Plus the material is a much lighter weight version so it’s got more movement than a traditional, heavier weight denim. This can be a great option for straight body shapes. However, if you are curvier, look for styles that follow your shape (ie. go in at the waist). Some give will be best so make sure you have some elastane and stretch in your denim or a chambray style of fabric. You could even opt for a belted shacket-style with a soft belt.

Staying up to date

As I said, trends come and go. Just because something is fashion or on trend, does not mean it will work for you. Learn what does suit you and you’ll look and feel great!

If you missed my spring/summer update, the guide featured in the video, the E-book and my recorded video masterclass are all available online until 30 September. These show you some of the colours and styles that you can find to help give you some guidance this spring/summer. Visit my shop online here.

The next live group workshop takes place on 7 October for autumn/winter. Reserve your spot here

10 Spring 2023 trends

Time flies doesn’t it? At the start of April, I shared the new colour and style trends for spring / summer 2023 at my ‘what to wear’ workshop.

I also use the same presentation during the recorded video masterclass (the latest version is available here). The next live group workshop will take place on 7 October and showcase the autumn/winter 2023 colour and style trends.

I’ve showcased some trends I’ve found on the high street in my latest video which you can watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/kAhXbMXh2U8

Colour meanings for International Colour day

Today marks an interesting day for all colour lovers. March 21st is international colour day which was established by the International Colour Association

Why March 21st?

March 21st is the “equinox” where equi = equal and nox = night, meaning around the equinox, night and day are approximately equal in length. Essentially it’s when light and dark are equal but without light, there would be no colour. Can you imagine a world without colour??

The impact of colour

I love showing people the impact of colour and how to wear it. When a colour suits you, you look vibrant, younger, healthier and brighter. Your eyes sparkle and it has a positive impact on your mood and those around you. People notice and may even comment on how great you look.

Wear something which isn’t quite so flattering and dark shadows will appear. You’ll young tired or unwell and your mood may be somewhat flat. People may ask if you’re feeling OK.

During my colour consultations, I introduce you to colour, the impact and show you some examples. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes when you wear the right colours for you in your clothes and makeup.

But, people also see colour in different ways and we may describe colour differently. I’ve written about the ‘science’ and colour descriptives in a previous blog which you can read here.

The meaning of colour

A search on google will introduce you to a vast array of colour meanings and there’s been many studies on this topic.

Think about how you feel when you wear a certain colour. Perhaps you receive comments when you wear a certain shade of colour. Maybe you notice a change in someone’s behaviour, or perhaps you react differently?

Did you know that colour is the most influential reason for buying something. Think about the last item of clothing you bought and the first thing that attracted you to it. If it was the colour (and research suggests it makes up over 80% of your buying decision), you can see how knowing the right colours to buy will save you money in the long run!

Brands also use colour to influence your choices and feelings too. Let me explain further.

Red

When we think of red, it can invoke feelings of love, excitement, energy, confidence. Apply that to the food arena and it can make you feel hungry or thirsty (think McDonald’s and Coca Cola). Ever noticed that ‘sale’ signs are usually red? You’re being enticed into a sense of urgency and not missing out. Wearing red can often project a feeling of confidence. A woman wearing a red lipstick or red dress is often referred to as ‘meaning business’ and essentially having the confidence to stand out and be noticed. But there’s different shades of red after all – they don’t all have to be so impactful!

Blue

Blue is the colour of the sky and sea so it can naturally create a sense of peace and safety for many. It’s why you often see brands use blue where trust is involved – NHS, Police and many banks. In a business sense, it’s often considered a more approachable colour than black. There’s a sense of calmness with blue too but we can often be described as feeling blue can’t we? This is thought to have originated from the 1300’s.

Yellow

Undoubtedly, a colour which you think of brightness, the sun and happiness. Yellow is a very eye-catching colour and often used to draw attention – think hazard lights or warnings. When we wear yellow, it invites that sense of optimism and joyfulness.

Green

Nature is full of many colours, but always lots of green. Think grass and trees. Being with nature releases a sense of tranquility for many too and you’ll see health companies use greens in their logos. There are many shades of green and I find it’s a colour which many association with school days.

Purple

This colour has a link in years gone by to royalty and was considered only for the wealthy. Purple is often associated with creativeness and mindfulness and from a colour perspective is usually one which suits everyone as it appears in everyone’s colour swatch palette’s.

Orange

A vibrant colour, orange is full of energy. Perhaps because it’s a mix of yellow and red but it can also feel quite impulsive too.

Get your colours done!

If you’ve found yourself wearing colours which don’t make you feel good then perhaps it’s time to learn more? Get in touch to book your colour analysis consultation. Appointments are available Monday to Saturday and available virtually and in the studio.

Spring colours for you

Earlier this year, I shared Pantone’s top ten colours for Spring.

They won’t exactly match what you have in your colour swatch wallets but I have combined some for each dominant colour type.

To demonstrate this, I’ve created some mini video images on my Facebook page. Please head on over to take a look and find the one for your colour type.

Here’s one covering them all:

https://www.facebook.com/TLCStyleandColour/videos/680238229075241/

Whilst you’re there, I’d be grateful if you could please share and like my Facebook page. If you have anything positive you’d like to share; please go ahead. I’d love to see any photos of you wearing your colours too so send me a picture, tweet me or share on my Facebook page.

Thanks

Spring colours

Stylishly step into Spring

Spring is typically the time of year for the spring clean and so is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe with new colours as well as new styles.

Your shoes can make or break an outfit, so here’s three of the hottest shoe trends this season and which ones will work for you.

THE TREND

All Wrapped Up

WHAT IS IT?

Emphasising the ankles, this look focuses on buckles, ribbons and straps wrapped around the lower half of your leg.

BEST FOR

Lean column/rectangle body shapes whose legs are likely to be slimmer. Be mindful of your skirt or trouser length with this trend as visibly cutting your legs in multiple places can make them appear shorter.

THE TREND

Flat Form

WHAT IS IT?

The sole to be seen in this Spring/Summer is thick, even and comfortable.

BEST FOR

Naturals will love this trend as shoes with a thick, even sole are both comfortable and practical. They will also give you a little height, so if you’re petite you get the best of both worlds!

THE TREND

Kitten Heels

WHAT IS IT?

A modern classic, the kitten heel comes back once again this season.

BEST FOR

Romantics will love this elegant, ladylike heel height. Those who are Grand in scale may also enjoy trying this trend to give the leg a little lift without adding too much height.
