Summer makeup tips

No one wants to wear a full face of make-up in the heat or by the pool, but a light application can give you that extra confidence boost should you need it.

Even if you don’t normally wear makeup, just a flick of mascara or a slick of colour to the lips can give you that finished look. Especially when worn with your best shades of colour.

I’m often asked about my makeup routine. I tend to switch up my makeup shades and products to reflect the change in weather. During the summer and warmer months I’ll choose a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation if I’ve got a bit of colour and bronzer rather than a blush.

Here’s my light summer essential make-up routine

This usually takes me less than 10 minutes to apply.

1. After cleansing, apply Rose Day Cream (includes SPF25) to face and neck

2. Apply tinted moisturiser in a shade which matches my skin tone (currently I’m using light-medium shade)

3. Sweep kaleidoscope bronzing powder across forehead, cheeks and chin (or use golden sand highlighter or rio pressed bronzing powder)

4. Apply melon eyeshadow all over eyelid (the highlighter and the bronzing powders can also be used)

5. Sweep navy mascara over lashes to add colour and lengthen (more complimentary than black. Black/brown and brown also available)

6. Use crushed berry 2 in 1 cream on lips (if you’re warmer tend try sunset glow instead)

7. Use blonde brow pencil to define and shape my eyebrows

As you can see – nothing too complicated!

If tinted moisturiser doesn’t give you enough coverage, then stick to a lightweight foundation like the morning light foundation. Most people tend to need a different shade in the summer versus the winter. I move from Porcelain to Oyster. Sometimes I’ll mix the shades together to achieve a better colour match if one looks to light or dark.

All items are available from the colour me beautiful range and available to purchase from the studio or online. Watch this video here on how to search and buy online. Commission is generated for orders made through this link: https://colourmebeautifuldirect.co.uk?aid=C564

If you’d like to try before you buy, you’re always welcome to make an appointment and seek any advice.

Three tips to avoid makeup mistakes

Everyone is different when it comes to makeup and as a colour, style and makeup consultant, I look at makeup as a method of enhancing your look and hiding other bits! It’s much like your clothes; choose the right colours and wear them to flatter you and ultimately to feel good!

Colour can have such an amazing impact – makeup as much as clothes! Wear wrong-for-you colours and it won’t do you any favours I’m afraid.

As with the clothes you choose, makeup is merely an extension of your overall look and the image you want to portray. Buying cosmetics is also an area I find people can waste a lot of money on. Trying to find the right shades of makeup in the shops can be really challenging and it’s where mistakes are often made. With this comes enormous guilt when you don’t wear what you’ve bought!

So, here’s three tips to help you avoid making the same mistakes.

Identify your style

How you apply your cosmetics, the look and how much/little you wear is determined by your style and lifestyle. If you don’t feel like you have the time or you prefer a more natural look, then you won’t spend hours putting on a face! What’s more, if you did, you’re not likely to recognise the person staring back at you in the mirror either. If you love the art of getting ready or creating different looks then you will spend the time, the money and enjoy it too. Equally, you’ll feel bare faced and exposed going out with just a flick of mascara and a bit of lippy!

Know your colours

When you wear makeup which flatters and enhances your features and hides and disguises any flaws; you’ll feel good – nice even! Choosing shades which compliments your features is always best as they will make you look radiant rather than unhealthy or age you prematurely.

If you don’t know what colours to go for – think about how you’d describe your overall features and what colours your eyes, hair and skin tone is. During my colour and makeup consultations, I will apply the shades of cosmetics which suit your colouring type and give you a list of the shades which suit you. You can also buy the range from the studio or online too.

If you’ve got colours which don’t suit you then see if you can mix and combine them with other colours to make them work for you. For example:

Wrong foundation shade? Try mixing it with another shade to make it a better colour match to your skin tone. (It should blend in with your jaw line with no visible ‘tide mark’.

Wrong shade of lipstick? Wear with another shade of lipstick or apply a lip pencil underneath. Both will create a ‘new’ lip colour which could be a more suitable colour match for you.

Eyeshadow too heavy? If you’ve got lighter features, richer shades of makeup can overpower your features so perhaps try a little bit in the corner or use it as a contour rather than an all over colour.

Wrong blusher? If you’ve got a warmer skin tone you’re better with peachy shade and if you’re a cooler tone you’re better with pinky. The wrong way round and you’re skin tone and texture will look ‘off’, grey or sallow.

Don’t be wasteful

When was the last time you checked the contents of your makeup bag? If you’ve got items lurking in the bottom that you’ve had for years, be warned. Makeup has a shelf life too just like any toiletries. As a general guide, bin anything which is more than two years old and if something doesn’t look or smell as you might expect; bin that too.

Putting to one side the wrong cosmetic shades you might have, count up how many of the same item you have and assess how often you use them. If you store your supplies in multiple places or frequently forget that you’ve already got one (or three) then it could be worth a clear-out! You’re arguably buying more than you need and can use.

Most packaging these days has a use by date which is indicated by an open pot sign with the number of months written inside. By way of an example, if the little pot says ’12’ then the shelf life is 12 months. It’s a bit like food really – beyond this, it’s not at it’s best. Ideally, throw it out to avoid infection and keep your products hygienic.

As a guide, keep the following life spans in mind from the time they are first opened:

Mascara – 6 months

Lipstick, Lip gloss, foundation, concealer – 12 months

Pencils, Cream Eyeshadows and cream blushers – 18 months

Powders, eyeshadows, blushers and bronzers – 24 months

Finally, don’t forget to regularly clean your makeup brushes and tools too. For any help with your makeup, get in touch – Toni.carver@tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk

How to shop for makeup in your colours

My clients tell me all the time how much time and money they save when they know what suits them as it stops them making shopping mistakes!

Trying to find the right shades of makeup in the shops can be more challenging. The easiest way to get the right cosmetic shades is to choose those designed for your colouring type.

Colour me Beautiful’s range has been created this way. I use it in consultations and you can purchase the range from me too as I’m a consultant. You can place an order from the studio in Wakefield, West Yorkshire or online.*

If you’ve not ordered online before, I’ve created this video to help. I show you how to shop for your perfect shades using the filters. These allow you to refine your search to colours for your dominant or sub-dominant colouring type. (You’ll learn your sub dominant types during a full colour analysis consultation.)

Take a look and watch the video here on Youtube.

To order online, use this link: https://colourmebeautifuldirect.co.uk…

For help choosing the shades and products simply get in touch with me: Toni.carver@tlcstylandcolour.co.uk

*All purchases through the online shop generate a commission payment. If you don’t see ‘Toni Carver’ underneath the colour me beautiful logo, no commission will be paid to me.

How to get your mojo back

Are you fed up of wearing the same old things?

Starting to feel like you’re trapped in loungewear??

No idea about wearing ‘normal clothes’!

Here’s some tips to help you feel back in control and get some light back in to the wardrobe darkness!

Organise your wardrobe

It isn’t rocket science but a tidy, edited and organised wardrobe makes it easy to see what you have. You’ll be surprised sometimes at what you have forgotten about. Start wearing them and enjoying them! But, do move on anything that you’re unlikely to wear again. One person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure as they say.

If this is a task that you find difficult to do yourself, rope in a friend or family member who you know will be honest about items that don’t suit you. If you can’t, then bring in the professionals and get in touch. Our Wardrobe Audits can be conducted face-to-face (when lockdown is lifted) or virtually by Zoom or face time. They are an excellent and fun way to identify what works for you, what doesn’t and what changes you need to make. If you’re determined to tackle it on your own, use our free declutter guide which you can download here.

Know your colours

There will be certain colours in your wardrobe that always seem to gain compliments. Actually there are many shades which will work for you. Perhaps you haven’t discovered them all, especially if you’ve never had a colour consultation with me! When worn, they will make you glow; you will look healthier and more vibrant. Who doesn’t need a bit of that! What’s not to love?

So look through your wardrobe with a critical eye. What colours seem to give you that wow? Make a note and build on these shades when you next shop.

I can show you up to 48 of your very best shades. Imagine that; a fabric wallet filled with fabulous colours which work for you. You will have a mixture of investment busting neutrals, and fashion colours that work together and on their own, with endless outfit possibilities.

Swatches

Identify your must-have pieces

These are items in your wardrobe that must pass many tests to achieve this glory status:

1) The colours look great on you
2) The styles and shapes flatter your figure
3) They fit in with your lifestyle
4) You feel comfortable and enjoy wearing them

Once you have worked out a few key pieces, you will be able to build on these with similar styles and colours in the future. Before you know it, your wardrobe will be cohesive, stylish, lifestyle appropriate and have longevity.

Of course this is what I show my clients every single day, during my Consultations. So why not invest in yourself? What better way to emerge!

New from old

As you work through your wardrobe to discover your Must-have Pieces, take the opportunity to try on different combinations. Split up any skirt and trouser suits; try the jackets with more casual pieces such as jeans. Dress down more formal pieces. Be aware of trends; cardigans are huge this season. Can you wear yours in a different way?

Be you!

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of copying your favourite celebrity, Blogger or Instagrammer, and even when you’re window shopping, because the outfits look amazing. Sadly it doesn’t mean that this will work for you. We’re all different, and what suits one person, may not look great on you. It’s far better to take inspiration and make it work for you rather than emulate a look that’s just not ‘you’.

Spend time discovering your own style, and dress for you. Understanding your style personality is key as there’s very little point in putting someone in heels and pencil skirts, if they’re happier in jeans and fleeces. If you’re a business owner, this is critical. Check out our new programme for 2021 here: Authentically You

Avoid the lull of bargains

It’s very easy to be swayed by the amazing savings to be had. 70% off! Just remember; every item that has been reduced, is because no-one wanted it at full-price! So, before you part with your hard-earned cash, ask yourself, ‘would I buy this at full price’. How many times have you purchased something in the sale, only to find six months later, it still has the tags on it?

That said, sales can be a great time to stock up on wardrobe basics (jeans, shirts, t-shirts, jackets), and investment buys (coats, boots and premium fabrics such as cashmere).

Make a list of items that you really need in your wardrobe and stick to it.

Get a quick makeup routine

We’re not all blessed with flawless skin, but a simple make-up routine can make you feel and look amazing. It’s incredible what you can achieve in ten minutes.

1. Cover dark under-eye circles and blemishes with the correct concealer.
2. Use a foundation or tinted moisturiser that is a good match to the tone of your skin.
3. Apply a swish of bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face.
4. If you enjoy wearing eye-shadow, choose shades that complement your colouring.
5. Choose an eye pencil that works with your skin tone.
6. Define your brows.
7. Top off with mascara.
8. Multitask with a product for lips and cheeks.

If you have been applying your make-up the same way for years or don’t know where to start, get in touch.

The only makeup brushes you need

Bamboozled by the sheer collection of makeup brushes available?

All this strobing, contouring, fat or thin brushes when you just want makeup application to be as easy as possible!

In my Complete colour consultation and makeup lessons, I use just four makeup brushes making application super simple and easy.

Here are my recommendations:

Large Powder Brush

The rounded shape with fluffy bristles can be used for both loose and compact/pressed powders and bronzers. This is the big fattest brush you’ll find.

Blusher Brush

Designed with tapered bristles to enable you to lightly apply blusher for a flushed, rosy tinge. It can also be used to apply highlighter across the top of your cheeks and the tip of your nose and chin.

The All-Over Eyeshadow Brush

This brush has dense bristles to enable it to pick up eyeshadow easily to pat onto the eyelid and blending different colours. Generally it will be a flat brush.

Angled Eye Contour Brush

The shape of this brush makes it easy to apply a darker shade of eyeshadow to the crease of your eyelid providimg definition to your eyes. You can also use this to apply eyeshadow as an alternative to an eye pencil or to your brows instead of a brow pencil.

Looking after your brushes

There are makeup brushes available to suit all budgets. However much you spend, I’d recommend cleaning your makeup brushes regularly to avoid product build up and germs.

Makeup brush cleansers are readily available and you can also use the Micellar water available through our online shop with 15% off until December..

Using a ‘brush egg’ can help to really get into the bristles for a more effective clean. Again, you don’t have to spend a fortune and they’re readily available.

If you’d like to learn a quick and easy routine using minimal products (and brushes) to achieve a natural but stunning look, book a makeup lesson. These are available online too.

Special offers to complete your look

Knowing what to wear doesn’t just mean the clothes you wear. For the ladies, it also means your makeup.

Makeup doesn’t have to take hours, change the colour of your face or learning how to contour, though if that’s your thing go for it!

But, whatever you do choose to apply to your face, just like your clothes, your makeup should enhance your features. This is as simple as choosing the right shades of colour in your cosmetics.

Colour me Beautiful offer a range of cosmetics to help you achieve this and as a Colour me Beautiful Consultant, I’m delighted to be able to offer these to you. They’ve been created with our colouring types in mind so you know you’ll always be able to get the shades which suit you from me.

If you’re following me on social media or you’ve seen me recently then you’ll have seen the amazing options available until 31 December.

All can be ordered online through my store and delivered to your home address. Spend over £45 and delivery is free.

Defining moments offer
Define those lips and eyes with four soft pencils; two for eyes and two for lips. Line the lips first and my tip is to fill in for a subtle all over, matt colour. Makeup – choose your colours wisely!

As with the clothes we choose, makeup is merely an extension of our look. There’s a vast array of cosmetics on display at makeup counters, but how do you know what to choose?

It can feel rather daunting at some of the brightly lit with un-natural light in some department stores. What seems to look good in the shop, may not suit you best when you get home. This can be both disappointing and costly.

Heres my three tips to avoid making those mistakes

First, understand and determine the needs of your skin. Adopt a good skincare routine together with a good, balanced, healthy diet. Oily skin requires different products to those with dry skin.

Secondly, your makeup look and choices will be determined by your style and lifestyle in much the same way as your clothing choices. If you don’t have the time or you prefer a more natural look, then you won’t want to spend an hour putting on a face! What’s more, if you did, you’re not likely to recognise the person staring back at you in the mirror either.

Third, choose your makeup colours wisely. Your makeup should flatter and enhance your features and can be used to hide and disguise any flaws too. Choosing shades suited to your colouring type will make you look radiant whilst others can make you look unhealthy or age you prematurely. You don’t need me to tell you to avoid this look!

What next?

When was the last time you checked the contents of your makeup bag? If you’ve got items lurking in the bottom that you’ve had for years, be warned. Makeup has a shelf life too. Bin anything which is more than two years old and if something doesn’t look or smell as you expect – bin that too.

Most packaging these days has a use by date which is indicated by an open pot sign with the number of months written inside. By way of an example, if the little pot says ’12’ then the shelf life is 12 months. Beyond this, it’s not at it’s best so be sure to throw it out to avoid infection and remain hygienic.

As a guide, keep the following life spans in mind from the time they are first opened:

  • Mascara – 3 to 6 months
  • Lipstick, Lip gloss, foundation, concealer – 12 months
  • Pencils, Cream Eyeshadows and blusters – 18 months
  • Powders, eyeshadows, blushers and bronzers – 24 months

Good hygiene is a must so wash your makeup brushes regularly. I use a brush cleanser and a ‘brush egg’ which allows me to give the brushes a proper clean between clients and they are very cheap to buy online too.

Throw away any disposable sponges once used or wash after each use. Any velour sponges should be washed weekly and replaced regularly.

Finally, give the bag a clean too!

If you’d like help reviewing your makeup bag then get in touch. I offer a free makeup assessment in which I prescribe the cosmetic shades which compliment your colouring type based upon the Colour me Beautiful tonal panel system.

Is red the colour of the season?

It was predicted that red would be the colour of the Autumn/winter season and with the festive season fast approaching; it’s no surprise.

A quick wander round the shops confirms this and I’m sure the emails in your inbox do too!

Colour has been found to affect people’s mood and energy levels – how do you feel when you wear colour?

Psychology

Red is the colour of energy making many people feel confident and in control and there’s a red to suit everyone.

The undertone (whether it has a yellow or blue base) matters a great deal with reds so be sure to choose the one best suited to you if you’re wearing it close to your face. If in doubt, revisit your colour swatch wallet or book a consultation.

Just remember, you don’t have to go top to toe in red! Embrace as much or as little as you like – here’s a few ideas.

Red trousers

Surprisingly versatile! Wear with a slogan top (also on trend), animal print or simple understated top.

Red jacket

Wear with denim jeans for an off-duty look or over a dress for work or dinner out. Invest in a winter coat or mac for a truly statement look.

Footwear

Red boots have walked onto the scene this time and can make quite a statement if you prefer to let your feet do the talking. If you prefer a more understated look, there are plenty of trainers, loafers and ballet shoes to choose from too. Extra points for embellishments!

Accessories

A simple way to update any look is with a statement item of jewellery such as a necklace, wrap around a new red scarf or invest in a new bag.

The red lip

It’s not always just about the clothes that you wear, your makeup finishes your whole look off.

An element of confidence is required to carry off a statement lip so make sure you choose the right shade for your skin tone. To keep it in place, use a lip base and a lip liner – both can be purchased from me.

The Colour me Beautiful range of cosmetics has been designed around our colour types and as with clothes, there’s a shade to suit everyone!

A few weeks ago (16 September), I posted a red lipstick colour to suit each of our dominant colour types on my Facebook page. Purchase a Lipstick for £14.50* from me or through my online shop.

Alternatively, why not try before you buy and make an appointment with me to have your makeup prescribed to your individual colouring. These sessions are free and can also be done as a group or party.

How to wear pink

You may have noticed that pink has been really popular this season and there is a pink for everyone!

Check out these shades to take you from Summer and into the Autumn.

Lights

Try wearing dusty rose and if you like your lipstick to match, you should check out the Colour me Beautiful Dusty Rose lipstick. Wear it with the hot pink scarf to finish off your look.

Deeps

Light colours aren’t always best for you, especially on their own, so try your Blush pink shade and for bright lips, try the Colour me Beautiful Sheer Fiesta lipstick (whilst stocks last). Or try the Berry burst lipgloss.

Warms

Pinks tend to have a cooler undertone to them which isn’t complimentary for you, so you’re best trying out the Coral colours in your palette. For your lips, try out the Colour me Beautiful Coral lipstick. For a brighter shade; try the Warm Pink lipstick.

Cools

You have lots to choose from in your palette! How about Hot pink if you’re daring! For your lips, try the Colour me Beautiful Soft Mauve or Sheer silk shades alongside the hot pink super soft scarf. Anyone preferring a more versatile cover up would love this fringed pashmina style.

Clears

You’ll need to create contrast with your shades so try Blush pink with something like Light teal. For the lips try out the Colour me Beautiful Strawberry lipstick.

Softs

Wear your pinks with some neutral shades such as pewter or taupe alongside blush pink. For the lips, try Colour me Beautiful Chiffon lipstick or Sheer Breeze along side the coral ;pink super soft scarf (if you’re warmer toned)

All Colour me Beautiful makeup and the scarf range is available online for Credit card payments or to order and collect from my studio in Wakefield. Simply get in touch to make arrangements or visit the shop here.

Holiday packing tips

If you’re planning on jetting off on holiday, this latest blog may be helpful, especially if you pack too much!

It can be easy to take too much away with you and find that you simply don’t wear everything that you take. With these simple tips, I’ll help you pack what you need and wear what you take!

Luggage

Invest in a lightweight suitcase so as much of your allowance is used on clothes as possible!

Preparation

Lay out your clothes, shoes and accessories so you can visually see what you have. You want to try and combine pieces together to make multiple outfits. (When you’ve had your colours done, this task becomes so much easier as mentioned below).

Be prepared to cut down the number of shoes and accessories you take as ideally you only need a few key pieces which will work with more than one outfit.

Think about that statement necklace; ideally you’ll be able to wear it two or three times. A great pair of sandals will work with three or four outfits, especially if they are in a metallic shade like silver or gold.

Colours

Pick out just a few colours from your palette and choose clothes this way. It’ll enable you to mix and match items much easier, creating a holiday capsule wardrobe.

Packing

Now, this isn’t something I do, but it’s long been recommended: Try rolling up your clothes to make the most use of space in your case. Use the inside of shoes for small items such as your underwear (I do however do this). Use sample sized toiletries such as shampoo and conditioner rather than taking the full sized container. It’ll take up less room and weigh less! (And I definitely do this!).

Makeup

Hot summer weather can change your makeup habits. I prefer to use a tinted moisturiser when I’m away as it’s more lightweight on my skin. I find I don’t need as much coverage that a foundation provides.

You can purchase the Colour me Beautiful Tinted Moisturiser from me as I stock five shades now.

The magnetic colour boxes are ideal for home and away as you can take one box with multiple eye shadows and blushers. Plus, when you finish each item, just push it out and dispose of it so you only replace what you use! Very sustainable too. Replacement stocks are available, just let me know what you need.

All products are also available through the online shop here.

The importance of undertone

If you’ve had a Colour me Beautiful colour analysis consultation previously, you’ll have been told as part of your analysis whether you have a Warm or a Cool undertone as your second characteristic, if you don’t have a Warm or Cool dominant colouring type.

What are undertones?

It’s the colour just below the surface of your skin. Regardless of whether you have a tan or not, it doesn’t change. The colours you wear in your clothes and make-up should ideally compliment your undertone, otherwise it could cause your skin to look lacklustre, sallow or grey.

Determining your skin tone

A quick way to determine if you have a Warm or Cool undertone is to look at the inside of your forearm. It’s not the most accurate, but if the veins appear blue or purple in natural light, it may indicate you have a cool undertone. A green or olive veins in natural light would be warm. If you compare the colour of the inside of your forearm with friends then as long as you don’t all have the same colouring, you’ll notice some differences. This isn’t an exact science! An accurate and definitive result can be obtained when you book your own colour analysis.

If you know what your undertone is, you can use the guidelines below to help you select the best make-up shades. These are supplied by Colour me Beautiful from the online shop, or arrange to call in to the studio to try before you buy.

Make Up!

EYES

If you have a Warm undertone, try drawing attention to your eyes with our gorgeous eyeshadows in gold whisper or olive. Wear with a moss eye pencil.

Cool undertones can play around with eyeshadows in pinks, purples and blues. A slick of Navy mascara for those with blue eyes will make them really stand out!

FACE

If you’re warm opt for peach or coral shades. A sweep of our Muscat or Salmon blusher will give you a subtle of hint of colour on the cheeks.

Those with a Cool undertone should go for something a little pinker. Marsala or candy blusher is perfect to pop into your magnetic colour box.

LIPS

Finish your look with a little lippy! Feeling bright and bold? Go for our fresh and fun Coral lipstick if you have a Warm undertone or Sheer rum.

The Cool customers could opt for our Pink Shell lip gloss; the perfect finishing touch to your make-up look or try Soft mauve lipstick.
