Nine tell-tale signs that you’re wearing the wrong colour

When you wear a colour which isn’t right for you, it shows. Sometimes, it may be subtle but other times, the effect is so dramatic that you immediately take it off!

This year, colour analysis has exploded on social media. But, if I’m honest, I’ve seen lots of examples where people have arrived at their own colour conclusion, which hasn’t been right for them.

Or, they’ve asked people online and in forums what ‘season’ they are or what colours suit them. The people telling them are no more qualified than the person asking the question. They’re sharing an opinion on what they think rather than what is accurate. Colour Analysis (with a professional) is based upon a science and basic colour theory. It’s not an opinion.

I’m a bit gutted for them to be honest. I know how exciting it is to find out your colours and learn how to create a wardrobe of coordinating items that do flatter you. Unfortunately, the ones who haven’t quite got it right end up spending more money on clothes that don’t suit them. And, they don’t understand why because someone online told them, or the filter they used made them look good.

So, I wanted to call out some really obvious tell-tale signs that the colour you’re wearing isn’t right for you:

You feel the need to add more blusher

Essentially, you’re looking ‘washed out’ and so you’re trying to add some colour to your face. A classic sign that the colour you’re wearing close to your face isn’t right for you.

You want to reach for a bright lipstick

Feeling the need to balance out what you’re wearing often means the colour isn’t right as it’s taking the limelight away from you and your features. It’s all about the colour that you’re wearing rather than you. Colour doesn’t always mean bright either whether that’s in clothes or lipsticks.

It’ll look great with a tan

What if you don’t tan? Now you’ve got to fake tan?? Essentially, the colour is either overwhelming you (too bright/too warm) or washing you out (too heavy/too pale). Needing to artificially and temporarily alter the look of your skin to make the garment suit you better isn’t the right consideration.

There’s a glow under your chin

Remember when you were a child and you held a buttercup under your chin to see if you liked butter?? (I sincerely hope this wasn’t just me or now I look like a plonker). Anyway, there’s a difference between a ‘glow’ and ‘glowing’. A glow usually means that the colour you’re wearing closest to your face is reflecting upwards to your features. Usually, under your chin which creates a reflection or a glow. Glowing occurs when the colour doesn’t reflect onto your skin, instead you look brighter and your skin looks clearer. You’re glowing because the colour is harmonising with you and not isolating itself from you.

You’ve got shadows/dark circles/look tired

If you’re already shattered, you don’t need colours to make you look worse! The colours you wear should make you look (and feel) healthier and brighter. Lines and shadows accentuated aren’t a good look.

You look ill

Ever had someone come up to you and ask if you’re feeling ok? Or that you look a bit ‘peaky’ and actually, you were feeling just fine? Colours which make you look poorly or cast a funny colour to your skin tone ar doing you no favours. Unless you wanted to be sent home of course.

Your jaw line has disappeared / you’ve got a 5 o’clock shadow

Often I see that the definition in your features disappears in the wrong colour tone. A defined jawline is what you want. For the guys, if you look like you need a shave (and you’ve had one already), it’s not right for you. Ditch it.

Your skin looks dirty

Assuming you’ve washed then the colour is clearly wrong for you!

Your skin looks red and agitated

Usually, this means that the colour is fighting against your skin tone and it’s bringing out blemishes and heightening redness in your cheeks and veins. The right shade of colour should balance out imperfections, not highlight them and make them look worse.

Why get a professional colour analysis?

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list but things I hear and frequently see during my colour analysis consultations. I’ve been colour analysing clients for over 10 years and I’ve seen lots of ladies, and some men.

A colour analysis consultation with a professional is an investment. Do your research so that you can feel confident that you’re getting an analysis from a trained professional.

As a professional, I’ve trained in this field (with Colour me Beautiful) and what to look for using basic colour theory. I don’t offer a ‘seasonal’ colour analysis but a ‘tonal’ one which I feel is much more refined. Not everyone fits neatly into one of the four seasons and I assess your full colouring type based upon all your physical features. I don’t cover your hair and I don’t assess your skin tone based upon the colour of your veins.

I explain all this and what to look for to my clients during a colour analysis session so that when they go shopping, they know what to look for. They’ve got their swatches to use as a helpful guide too, not a bible or rule-book to follow. I can take you shopping of course, but I know realistically, it’s not always possible for me to be with you every second of the day. My clients get continued advice via email following their appointment to help support and guide them on their journey.

Autumn Spotlight trend: Styling the bias cut midaxi satin skirt

Satin is one of the many trends I’ve highlighted within my seasonal updates this autumn and winter. Like many trends, it’s not the first time we’ve seen it. It’s got a 90s vibe about it (just me?) and we saw it during spring and summer too.

Something which many people struggle with is how to wear a skirt. More specifically; what to wear with a skirt. Skirts can throw up all sorts of issues; the best length, what shoes, fitted or baggy top, to name but a few.

During my recent seasonal update workshop, I picked this bias cut satin skirt from New Look.* The colour was fabulous and the fabric just devine. Satin can add elegance to an outfit and make it feel dressier.

To demonstrate that you don’t need to restrict it to evening wear, I raided my wardrobe for things I could style it with. Here’s a selection of 8 (9 if you include the jacket):

Alternative options

– Smarten the skirt up with a blazer or jacket

– Try a waistcoat

– Wear a cropped top or t-shirt

– Swap the trainers for a pair of boots. Both long and ankle would work

– If trainers are not your thing, try some flat shoes, brogues or loafers

The skirt

As mentioned, the skirt featured is the burgundy satin bias cut midi skirt from New Look*. It comes in eight other colours too: black, dark grey, khaki, green, dark green, navy, red and gold.

It has an elasticated waistband which sits hidden inside the skirt. New Look classify it as a ‘midaxi’ length (which is somewhere between midi and maxi).

If you’re shorter in the leg or petite in size/scale, it’s likely to finish lower than it does on me. I’m 5 foot 5 and you can see that it comes to my ankles.

A bias cut can be flattering because it’s cut on an angle which creates more stretch and movement to the material. Whilst this is 96% polyester, it has an amazing soft, lightweight feel to the fabric and has elastane so it’s got some stretch.

Style personality and fit

However I’ve styled this skirt, your own style personality and shape needs to be taken into account. I talk you through fabric and styles plus your style personality influences during a style and image consultation.

I can help you select the most flattering styles and fabrics for your body shape – just get in touch to book your appointment.

– Want to feel up-to-date and current with your clothes. There are twelve trends I’ve picked this season which can be introduced or adapted from what you already have in your wardrobe (or pre-loved). The guides will help you focus on how to update your wardrobe to feel more confident in your outfits.

– Feel overwhelmed by choice and dislike shopping. Having the guides makes it easier to shop for specific items you’ll need.

  3. E-book containing 19 pages detailing the colours, styles and trends and shape considerations. Includes eight colours and makeup shades for each dominant colour type and the 15 colours from London Fashion Week coded for each dominant colour type. Also includes wardrobe and shopping checklists so you can focus on what you have and what you need.
  4. Recorded on-demand masterclass which is a pre-recorded video showing you the examples of the colours and trends you’ll find in the shops and how to wear them. The video lasts 38 minutes and uses the same slides I use in the live group workshop.

What’s the cost of the seasonal update?

The price ranges from £7.50 to £17.50 depending upon the seasonal update guide. It’s a cost effective way to tap into the expertise of a colour and style consultant!

Who should not invest in the seasonal update?

If you want to become a trend-setter and aren’t bothered if something suits you, these guides are not for you!

You should have some idea about what suits you. If not, you’ve lost your confidence or you can’t find a way through the confusion then these guides may not be the answer. A consultation or bespoke session may be better suited and you’re welcome to arrange a no-obligation call. What kind of results can you expect from seasonal update?

I’m often told my guides stop you making the same mistakes and buying more things you don’t wear/don’t suit you. Having a colour and style expert find items you wouldn’t normally choose yourself can saves time! Using the seasonal updates makes you more aware of what’s already in your wardrobe that you can re-wear again.

How to wear a scarf – 3 ways and 3 reasons

Given the weather has turned colder here in the UK, it means that the winter woollies will have to come out!

For me, a scarf is the easiest and most versatile accessory that you can have in your wardrobe.

This autumn/winter season, you’ll notice an abundance of colourful scarves, capes and cover-ups available.

I’m sharing my guidance and more on the trends, colours and styles in my new seasonal updates which you’ll find full details to help you make informed decisions here.

3 reasons to wear a scarf

A scarf is a fabulous accessory to invest in and often a more cost effective way of updating your wardrobe too.

Firstly, when you wear a scarf in a shade of colour which compliments your features, you’ll look fabulous! That’s because the colour that you wear near to your face will reflect upwards. Choosing a colour that compliments your features will avoid casting shadows onto your features. You can learn your best shades of colour and how to wear them during a colour analysis consultation. A scarf is included in your package with me in the studio too.

It can rescue any outfit! So, if you’re wearing something which isn’t one of your best colours, it will cast shadows onto your features. This will have the unfortunately impact of making you look tired or older than you are and you don’t need that! Adding a scarf will break up the not-so-good colour in your outfit to rescue it and make you look much healthier (as long as it’s right for you of course!). A scarf is a really useful accessory to add when you feel you need to add a finishing touch which will elevate the outfit too.

This last reason may seem a little boring or practical, but it will actually help to keep you warm!

3 simple ways to tie a scarf

Many people struggle to wear a scarf as they feel unsure about how to tie it. They see others who make it look effortless and just can’t make it work the same way for them! Often though, the main reason they struggle is actually down to their style personality (this is something which you learn much more about during my style and image consultation).

I’m often asked for ways of wearing and tying a scarf and this is something which I’ve covered previously. In this video, I’m sharing my three favourite methods which are really simple and easy to do. I’m talking you through how to tie each one in turn in the video as well which you can watch here on YouTube.

In the video, my first one is a really simple and effortless method which I call the loop. You simply loop it around your neck and adjust the ends. You can do this with any length or thickness of scarf.

The second is what I call the twisted loop. You start using the first method and then twist each end into the loop which twists the scarf. Easily than it sounds and definitely worth a watch!

Lastly, what I call the plaited hoop. In the video, I’ve slowed down the clip so you can follow it a little easier but you’ll start like that one where you push both ends through the hoop at one side (the one everyone does). Instead push one end through the hoop, twist the hoop round to make a figure of 8 and feed the remaining end into the hole you’ve just created. Lies much flatter and nicer too. Watch the video to see these come to life: https://youtu.be/XZ9i9ZPWLDc

The super soft scarf featured in the video

You’ll notice that I’ve used a long scarf in the video tutorials. This is the purple super soft scarf by Colour me Beautiful. There are 5 colours available (including the purple which is a universal one, so it suits everyone) but you’ll find one for every colour type and if you need help identifying the right shade for you, do get in touch. If you know your colouring type, you can refine the filter through the online shop to show you the ones which work for you. Available from the studio as well as online here.

New square scarves

To commemorate Colour Me Beautiful’s 40th birthday, they have introduced a very special new range. The new Sofia Mulberry Silk Scarves are available in three colour ways; Warm, Cool and Universal (so this one suits everyone).

Mulberry Silk is one of the most expensive and luxurious fabrics in the world. It is smoother and stronger than any other silk and breathable too. Order yours online or from the studio.

The Universal Sofia is made up of colours that we can all wear; soft white, teal, purple, pewter, taupe and stone.

The Cool Sofia is made up of cornflower, soft white, icy-grey, blue-green, cassis and hot pink and is perfect for anyone with a cool undertone.

The Warm Sofia is made up of olive, turquoise, cream, sage, terracotta and orange-red and will look sensational on anyone with a warm undertone.

Each scarf measures 88cm x 88cm.

What do I do with clothes I don’t wear (and can’t let go)

Each month on the blogs I try and address some common questions I get asked.

A challenge which many people experience is having clothes they don’t wear, which they can’t bring themselves to get rid of.

Whilst there isn’t just one solution, here’s some ideas which may help.

A new life

Firstly, if you’ve got a lot of clothes you don’t wear, it’s worth seeing if you can identify any reasons for not wearing them.

Perhaps you’ve out-grown them, or they are no longer appropriate for your lifestyle. Maybe you don’t feel like ‘you’ when you wear them. Whatever your specific reasons, it’s worth asking yourself if this is likely to change and if you will re-wear them again.

Can you give a new lease of life to any of the items? With clothes I’m not wearing because of the colour, I’ve dyed them! Refreshing the colour in an old pair of jeans or completely changing the colour of other garments has helped me to wear things again.

Are any of them the wrong length or fit? It may take more effort or skill, but these can be altered so you do wear them again – even if it means taking it to a seamstress. Re-purpose clothes into other things, like a cushion cover, a bag or make a top or skirt from a dress instead.

If you’re not likely to re-wear them or change them to make them work for you, why is it that you keep them? Let the guilt go, thank it for it’s time and let someone else get joy from them.

Having a constant reminder each time you open the wardrobe doors does you no good. It’s a shame to let them gather dust at the back of your wardrobe when others would love them. Donating them will keep the item in circulation, avoid landfill and lighten your emotional load too.

Swap and swish

When I was younger, my friends at school would regularly have a clothing swishing party. Everyone would bring items along they don’t wear anymore and swap for something new! These events still happen today encouraging you to bring along your unworn items in exchange for a ticket to swap for another garment. They’re a great way of obtaining ‘new’ items, refreshing your wardrobe and culling things you don’t wear. You could even organise your own event too!

Sell

I like my money where I can see it; hanging in my closet! Carrie Bradshaw

A famous saying in the original series of Sex and The City. This is the reason that many people can’t let things go. The truth is that you’re unlikely to get the same money back that you spent in the first place (unless it’s vintage of course, then who knows!). But, this isn’t always the best reason to keep hold of things. Especially if you’re not wearing them.

Selling clothes you don’t wear (and unlikely to wear again) will help to lighten the load you feel emotionally and put some money in your pocket. Think of it as a reward for keeping them safe! There’s a huge pre-loved clothing market which I can’t see disappearing any time soon. Sure, it means competition, but everyone loves a bargain and your lovely clothes can be enjoyed by someone else whilst you earn a little cash.

Use the money you earn to treat yourself to something new (which you will wear), pay off some debts or treat yourself to a night out or a takeaway!

Ebay, Vinted and Facebook marketplace are the common places to sell and there are pre-loved groups on Facebook for certain brands too.

Rent

Whilst it won’t solve a bulging wardrobe, if you’ve got good quality, high end clothing and accessories you can’t bring yourself to part with, consider renting them out. Hurr, ByRotation and MyWardrobeHQ will facilitate the rental of your items to people for days or weeks at a time. It’s another way to give life to your unworn garments, make some money on the side and doesn’t mean getting rid of things.

The three F’s

Opening your wardrobe and feeling fed up that you can’t wear them will not help you to feel good getting dressed. There’s nothing worse than having a wardrobe filled with clothes that don’t fit you.

My advice? Get those clothes out of there!

If you can’t bring yourself to undertake any of the previous suggestions, store them away for now. Removing them from view will improve your mindset and how you feel each day. You can always revisit the items at a later date when you won’t feel quite so emotionally influenced by them.

Your wardrobe should be filled with clothes that fit you right now. They will be appropriate for you, right now. This way, you’ll have clothes you can wear now, even if it does make your wardrobe look sparse.

Clothes which fit you, flatter your figure and which make you feel good (the three f’s) should be in your wardrobe right now! Everything else is taking up space in your wardrobe (and your head).

Having help from someone who can be more objective and who isn’t emotionally attached to your clothes can also be helpful. This could be a friend, relative or a professional so don’t be afraid to seek assistance if you need it.

Use my guides here if you feel up for tackling your wardrobe on your own or get in touch: toni.carver@tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk

Unboxing the b.kinda mystery box

Given it’s Second hand September, it seemed like a good opportunity to introduce the B.Kinda mystery box.

They do things a little differently by putting together pre-loved clothing boxes. It’s a mystery because you won’t know what’s inside!

It’s worth pointing out that I’ve not been paid for this – in fact, it will be a surprise for them too! I wanted to highlight them for doing something different in the pre-loved, second hand space.

Detailed below is how it works and what’s included based upon my own experience. Plus, I’ve recorded a video to show you the items I received and how to use their website. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/CvR1GyAfD88

How does it work?

The mystery box is made up of four items picked for you based upon your preferences.

There’s an element of tailoring your order with scope to add notes (if you didn’t like stripes for example).

First, select the age that you like to dress, rather than the age you actually are. If you fancy something a little more mature or youthful, select a different age range box.

Next, it’s about sizing. The options are from 6 to 24. You’ll be asked to select the size for your tops, then bottoms and finally, dresses. I like this because it’s an opportunity to reflect your body shape. So, if you’re a pear shape or inverted triangle, being able to select a different size top to bottoms makes it much more customised to you.

In relation to trousers, you can choose the leg length which is great if you don’t have balanced proportions. Select short, regular or long.

Now the size and fit is sorted, you’ll move onto your colour choices. In this section, you mark the colours that you don’t like. Because I know my colouring type, it was an easy one for me.

Here’s the colours I didn’t want:

  • Auburn (too warm)
  • black (too draining)
  • brown (not a fan)
  • gold (I’m better in silver)
  • copper (too warm)
  • grey (don’t need anything)
  • beige (not a fan)
  • orange (too warm and bright)
  • yellow (too tricky getting the right tone)

This left me with: blue, green, purple, navy, pink, red, silver, white and burgundy.

Being able to refine to a colour group allows you to choose a colour you love or fill a gap in your wardrobe.

What’s inside the mystery box?

If you fancy a nosy, watch the video and I’ve summarised the contents below.

One top was cute with little details to the shoulders and a lightweight fabric. Very similar to blush pink in the soft, light, clear and deep dominant swatches.

The second top was a boho pattern on a lightweight fabric. The base colour was a little darker than the grey green in the warm and soft dominant swatches.

Onto the dresses; the first was a warmer shade of red with zip details to the front. Would definitely work for someone with warmer tones in their colour type (dominant or sub-dominant).

The final dress was a patterned dress. On closer inspection looked dark and night navy and soft white combinations. Colours which could easily be worn by most people. The dress was fitted, lined and had a side concealed zip.

The result!

At the time I ordered, it cost me £15 for four garments including postage (it’s a rather big box too!).

As at 1 September, the cost has increased to £20.95 which to me still represents great value for money! I asked about the change and they said: “Our boxes always reflect the change in seasons. From today (1st September), every box we pick will include autumn clothes as well as all year round pieces. We have tried to hold back with a price change for as long as we could but in order to continue to grow and support our community this is something we had to do.”

You’d have to spend much more to get four brand new garments. This method means you’ll have rescued four items from landfill and at the very worst, you’ll have given to charity.

The gamble is that it’s a mystery box – so you could have four new items you’ll wear, or nothing at all.

For me personally, two of the four would work for me. I’ll definitely be keeping the pink top because of the style, the fabric and the colour.

The colour of the second top is too warm for me, the pattern too much and too boxy for my shape.

Whilst I love a dress, I won’t be keeping either. The red dress was too warm a tone for me, not as fitted as I’d have preferred and the zips too dramatic for my style personality!

The patterned dress had all the features of being a keeper (colour, style, shape, fit) but, on reflection, I just don’t have a gap for it in my wardrobe.

Summary

Overall, I would still recommend having a go at the mystery box. It’s a great way to dabble in pre-loved and support a good cause.

It is a surprise and a mystery after all so the excitement of not knowing is part of the thrill! The ordering process is pretty simple as you can see in the video.

Whilst it doesn’t drill down to select the specific shades (like you’ll learn in your colour analysis), being able to focus on a colour you love or that you’re seeking is great. Tailoring the size and cut narrows down the chances of the fit being better for you too.

As Forest Gump said: you never know what you’re gonna get! Surely that’s all part of the fun.

Will you shop second hand this September?

Buying, wearing and donating second hand clothes helps to reduce the demand for brand new clothes. In turn, this can help to reduce the damage to our planet all without making you look any less fabulous.

Repair, rewear, recycle

In 2019, Oxfam launched Second Hand September which continues to inspire thousands of people to take up the challenge and not buy anything new for 30 days. Visit their website here to learn more and sign up to the campaign. You can also follow and contribute to the campaign by using the hashtag on social media #secondhandseptember.

Buying pre-loved isn’t the only way to make better choices.

I’ve shared these previously (credit to The Great British Sewing Bee and the previous blog about sustainable wardrobes here.)

Given the over-production of ‘fast fashion’, it’s much harder to avoid over-consuming it.

The choices can feel endless and thanks to online shopping, they’re available 24/7. It’s hard to overcome the problem without making a conscious effort.

Choose well, buy less

Buy less. Choose well. Make it last. Quality, not quantity. Everybody’s buying far too many clothes: Vivienne Westwood

RIP Vivienne; you were right!

Choosing well and buying less clothes will make a difference to your wardrobe, your pocket and ultimately the planet.

Knowing and understanding what really suits you will help you make informed choices about what you wear. This will help you to shop for the gaps you have in your wardrobe. These can be carefully chosen items each season (using my advice from seasonal update workshop) as well as pre-loved/second hand shopping.

Last year I was asked to contribute to an article in the Yorkshire Post as they were writing about Second hand September. It is proudly displayed in the studio and you can have a peak here.

Many clients assume I shop a lot, but the reality is that I don’t. I do browse a lot which helps to inspire new outfits and ideas and I help lots of ladies with their own wardrobes and shopping to fill the gaps. I tend to shop for key pieces I’ve identified which fill a gap in my wardrobe. Regularly, I’ll clear out items I’m not wearing by selling some and donating others. There are lots of garments I’ve had in my wardrobe for many years which I still re-wear today. Some are pre-loved too.

I do hope I’ve encouraged you to take part in the Second hand September challenge and don’t let the fact that you’re part way through the month stop you!

Consider a wardrobe clear out (use my guides if you need help) and donate your unworn clothes to charity or try and sell them instead to make some money back.

Good luck!

This virtual event lasts around 90 minutes. You’ll learn the key colours, styles and trends this autumn and winter with a presentation I’ve prepared. Don’t worry – it’s not death by powerpoint as I’ll also share some of my top picks from the high street too.

What should you wear to a colour or style consultation?

It’s important to feel comfortable during your time with me in the studio. Here’s some guidance on what to wear to your session.

Colour Analysis Consultations

During your appointment, you’ll wear a white draping cape. This will cover your clothes so you can wear what you like!

Please avoid wearing high necked tops as these are likely to show above the cape.

I’ll need to see your hair so hats and hair coverings need to be removed. Your hair plays an important part of your appearance, which is why it’s taken into account during my colour consultations. Should you have any religious or personal reasons for covering or removing, please get in touch: toni.carver@tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk

It’s best to arrive makeup (and fake tan) free so I can assess your skin tone and the impact of colour.

If you’d like to know what happens during a colour analysis consultation, you can read more about what you can expect here: https://www.tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk/2023/11/20/what-happens-during-a-colour-analysis-consultation-and-what-can-you-expect/

Style & Shape Consultations

Wear something which you’d normally wear which you’ll be happy and comfortable in during the session.

There will be no need to strip you to your underwear either!

If you’d like to know what happens during a style and shape consultation, you can read more about what you can expect here: https://www.tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk/2024/05/20/what-happens-during-a-style-and-shape-consultation-and-what-can-you-expect/

Makeup Assessments and Tutorials

You’ll be wearing a white draping cape during your session which covers what you’ll be wearing.

Please do arrive makeup free though.

Online sessions

Whilst conducted in different ways, the principles are the same for both in person and virtual sessions.

Appointments are available Monday to Saturday.

How to test the colours that suit you

If you read my previous blog about how there’s a new ‘trend’ to get a colour analysis done (it’s not really new!) and you fancy dabbling in ‘testing’ yourself, I wanted to offer some guidance.

As much as I recommend a professional diagnosis from a trained colour consultant (like myself), you may still want to do-it-yourself.

You won’t have the same tools or experience that I have of course, but hopefully my tips will help you.

HOW TO TEST

So you might be wondering how to test for the colours which suit you best.

My recommendation is always to use fabric because it is the most reliable indicator. Use whatever fabric you can get your hands on. It could be cushion covers, pillowcases, clothes, scarves or any other fabric!

You want to hold the fabric up underneath your chin for the best results. Ideally, have no makeup on and do this in natural daylight.

Check your complexion in a mirror when you’re holding each piece of fabric to see the impact against your face. Is your face and your look enhanced? Do you look fresher and brighter, or is your skin looking dull, pale, or washed out?

What you’re actually looking for is this brightening effect and that you are wearing the colours, not the other way around.

If it looks like the colours are wearing you, it’s often not an indication that the shade of colour isn’t quite right for you.

I’ve recorded a little video demonstration which you’ll also find on my YouTube page. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/zZh3jJGTOB0

When you are doing this yourself or you’ve had a go at another method, like an online quiz or the spinning wheel filter and find that the colours still aren’t quite working, you might be right!

Not everyone fits neatly into just one box. So, consider a professional colour analysis instead. After all, if the outcome you’re seeking is to make fewer shopping mistakes, it can be just as costly to buy things in the wrong colours!

I’ve been trained in colour analysis by Colour me Beautiful using a tonal colour analysis system. Appointments are available Monday to Saturday.

Finding your colours: the new Tik Tok trend explained

The latest craze on social media (mostly TikTok) is all about ‘finding your colours’.

Face after face surrounded by a shifting wheel of colour. A ‘filter’ applied to your face to determine the colours that suit your skin tone so you can make better choices when buying clothes.

Of course, this isn’t unfamiliar to me. After all, I trained as a colour and style consultant with Colour me Beautiful over 10 years ago. Colour analysis consultations are my most popular service.

In fact, it’s what brought Ysabelle and her mum to join me for a joint colour analysis consultation.

Ysabelle had seen the hype on Tik Tok and been fascinated by the different faces and how certain colours looked better than others. Having mentioned it to her mum, she told her that it was something she’d wished she had done herself! Her mum had a friend who had been for a colour analysis consultation in the 80s and subsequently raved about it. Flashing her colour wallet which she used to help her shop for her colours, and how fabulous she looked wearing them. Her mum regretted that she hadn’t taken the plunge and booked her own session.

Until now! Ysabelle booked for both of them to have a colour analysis consultation with me and they both learnt all about colour, what to look for and how to wear them. Admittedly, it was rather different to the spinning wheel of colour you see on Tik Tok!

So, let me explain what you need to know

Discovering the palette of colours that suits you best can put you at a major advantage to achieving a more coordinated wardrobe. Everyone can wear every colour, but not every shade of every colour will suit you the same.

When you know what’s right for you, you can make better choices and fewer mistakes shopping because you’ll know what to buy (and leave behind). It’s not quite as simple as using a ‘spinning wheel’ seen on Tik Tok! Get it wrong and you can still end up making mistakes when shopping.

Colour Analysis: Different Systems

Broadly speaking, there are two methods of colour analysis – seasons and tonal. The seasons is what you’ve been seeing on social media and the wheel relates to spring, summer, autumn and winter. A seasonal colour analysis focuses primarily on your skin tone believing that your undertone stays the same for the rest of your life and is irrespective of hair colour changes.

With a tonal colour analysis, the focus is on all of your physical features; your hair colour, eye colour and skin tone. Taking into account all three elements allows for much more flexibility so your colours are refined to suit you. I’ve seen many clients over the years where not just the hair colour, but their skin tone has changed. I’ve written about it previously here. The tonal system is what I use in my colour analysis consultations and I believe it’s more refined and bespoke to you.

Rather than being a season, you’ll have a dominant colouring type which is one of six core types. I’ll assess this during all my colour sessions and colour parties. When you choose  a full colour analysis, I’ll ‘test’ you twice more to determine your sub-dominant colouring types. This expands your palette further given there are 24 possible options under the tonal analysis system!

The beauty with this is that if your look changes (by choice or nature), we can tweak your colours to reflect the changes. You can feel confident knowing that you’ll always look your very best because you’ve learnt how to wear colour. If you do start to notice that certain colours start to look a little ’off’ then it’s probably the right time to book yourself in for a colour review.

Self Diagnosis

Like anything, there’s always a way to do-it-yourself. Just like any DIY job, you may not have the tools or experience to correctly ‘diagnose’ and get the perfect result. But, you might be happy with the outcome you’ve arrived at and feel no need to fine-tune it further with a professional.

People can see colour in different ways. There are often differences in the way the brains and eyes work together to see, perceive and make meaning of colour. Your own experience of colour and exposure to varying colours will differ too. One may see ‘fawn’ whereas another person may just see ‘brown’. ‘Teal’ could seen as ‘aqua’, ‘turquoise’, ‘blue’ or ‘green’!

Testing

However you interpret colour, it’s undeniable how influential it can be. So, if you want to see the true impact of colour, try and use fabric. It’s a much more reliable and better reflection of colour.

Use whatever you have – clothes, cushions or pillow cases! Hold the fabric up underneath your chin without any makeup and in natural daylight. Check in a mirror if your complexion is enhanced and looks fresher, or if your skin appears dull or pale.

A common mistake people make is seeing a ‘glow’ underneath their chin. A glow doesn’t necessarily mean your skin is ‘glowing’ so wear with care.

You may have read that you can check the colour of your veins to determine if you have a warmer or cooler undertone. Unfortunately, this isn’t an accurate way to determine your undertone and has more to do with how light hits the skin. The blood in your veins is red after all!

It’s always worth noting that not everyone fits neatly into just one box. So, if you’ve used the ‘spinning wheel’ or other method of self-diagnosis and have found that you don’t quite fit or that colours from different seasons both seem to look ‘ok’, a seasonal analysis may not be right for you. Consider a tonal colour analysis instead. After all, if the outcome you’re seeking is to make fewer shopping mistakes buying clothes which don’t suit you, it can be just as costly to buy things in colours which still aren’t right for you.

The only way to be 100% accurate is to seek the advice of a professional colour consultant who has trained in this field. A professional colour analysis can last up to two hours and you’ll learn not just what colours suit you but how to wear them.

Professional Colour Analysis

For many people, understanding and wearing their most flattering shades of clothes and makeup can be life changing. It may sound dramatic, but it’s something my clients tell me all the time.

When you wear ‘your’ best shades of colour, you’ll look brighter, healthier and boost your confidence and how you feel.

Under the tonal system, there are three elements to your features which means there are three elements to your colouring type. By assessing different colours against your face using my cotton fabric drapes of material, I’m assessing the undertone, depth and clarity of your individual colouring.

We’ll also go through various colour combinations, ideas and makeup suggestions. You’ll also take away a fabric swatch to use as a guide for shopping (with my colour analysis consultations). It’s not about being restrictive, rigid and prescriptive because I’m not the police (or your mother) and I want you to enjoy your journey with colour!

It is an investment. But, the knowledge you gain will save you money in the long run.

A client’s thoughts following her colour analysis consultation

I was delighted when Ruan from The Yorkshire Sew Girl shared her experience following her recent colour analysis consultation.

Ruan makes many of her own clothes. It was something she’d always been interested in as she really wanted to know what suited her best. Fabric can be just as expensive (if not more), than buying clothes! So, it’s equally as important to learn what suits you to help you make the right choices!

We were so engrossed in her colour analysis session that Ruan didn’t manage to record much ‘live’ coverage! She shares lots of information on what goes on, so if you’d like to hear about her experience from a client’s point of view, take a look at the video on her YouTube channel.

6 alternative ways to tie a wrap dress belt (that’s not a bow)

A wrap dress is arguably the one dress which everyone owns.

Most people tie the belt in a bow, which is a bit like tying your shoes laces.

In fact, one of my clients contacted me recently to ask for my advice on alternative ways to tie her wrap dress belt which inspired me to create this video!

She had been using the traditional bow method for years and felt that it didn’t always look ‘tidy’ or as ‘nice’ as it could do.

Here are six different ways to tie the belt. If you have a long belt on another dress, it might be worth trying these methods out on it too.

The full video is available on my YouTube channel. Here’s the link to watch it: https://youtu.be/kShwWUyVZCw

Do let me know which one is your fave and if you’ll be giving it a go!

How does getting my colours done help me build a sustainable wardrobe?

I’ve talked about the benefits of getting your colours done before. Clients tell me all the time how easy it is for them to shop when they know their colours and, how they save money because they no longer buy things that don’t suit them.

When I first had my colours done many years ago now, I found the same. Even now, I can still walk into a store, look at the racks and I don’t even walk over unless I spy colours that I know will suit me. Some of my clients have a picture on their phone for any impulse trips when they haven’t got their fabric swatches with them so they don’t make mistakes.

Consider Pre-Loved

Of course, this alone won’t build a sustainable wardrobe. It’s about the choices that you make. If you’re making fewer mistakes and buying less items as a result of knowing your colours, this will help you build a more sustainable wardrobe. New clothes don’t need to be brand new either. Pre-loved is huge now. Charity shops, Vinted and EBay have hoards of clothing and you’ll find lots being sold with the tags still on! Just search BNWT (brand new with tags) or BNWOT (brand new without tags). There’s also swap shops and clothing exchanges in most cities now if you prefer physical browsing and you can still take your swatches with you too!

Repair, rewear, recycle

Patrick Grant on The Great British Sewing Bee was instilling the virtues of repair, rewear and recycle recently. All things we frequently hear are essential elements to building a more sustainable wardrobe. Whilst I do have clients who do these things, not everyone can or will. On Instagram (8 June), they shared three statistics:

  • The average person buys 60% more clothes than they did 15 years ago (and wears them for half as long)
  • The equivalent of one bin lorry full of clothing is dumped in landfill or burned every single SECOND
  • The fashion industry produces and sells a staggering 100 billion garments every YEAR

I took to google to ask “how many people live in the world”? The answer was 7.888 billion (2021), which is 12-13 garments for every person. Essentially that’s one clothing item every month.

Building a more sustainable wardrobe is something which many people aspire to, but over-consuming ‘fast fashion’ is the challenge given the over-production. It can simply be too tempting! There’s a reason there’s so many ‘bargains’ in the sale rail! Remember it’s only ever a bargain if you actually wear it. Consider not just the cost of the item, but the cost per wear.

Introducing Sam

Sam booked my Complete Colour Analysis consultation because she wanted to be more sustainable with her future clothing choices. She wanted to make fewer mistakes and know that what she bought suited her.

Her wardrobe wasn’t particularly colourful because she didn’t feel she knew what colours worked for her. She wasn’t afraid of experimenting, but felt she needed more guidance and understanding so she didn’t keep making the same mistakes. Sam wanted a more coordinated wardrobe so she could make more outfits from fewer things.

After her session, she told me that she felt much more confident about future shopping purchases knowing that what she did buy would suit her and that she had her swatches to help guide her.

Colour analysis concerns

One concern with having a colour (or a style consultation) is that you’ll need to get rid of all your clothes and start again! This isn’t something which I recommend (nor is it sustainable and something I’ve covered previously). I guarantee you’ll have things hung up which don’t suit you, but then you probably knew that already.

During a colour consultation I talk you through how to wear your colours. It’s not just what colours to wear as there’s so many different shades and fabric choices. Understanding how to wear things you may already have which aren’t your best colours is important too. This could be dying them, keeping them away from your face or ensuring you wear something more complimentary close to your face such as a scarf or another top underneath. Knowing the ‘rules’ and how to apply them is all part of the journey!

Too many clothes

Most people admit they have far too many clothes in their wardrobe. They also tell me they only ever wear a fraction of the clothes in their wardrobe. When I ask what the reason is for not wearing these clothes, they often tell me that they don’t fit. Or that they don’t know how to wear them. Or they used to wear them, but now not so much. Which begs the question – why keep them?

Whatever the reasons for keeping hold of things we don’t wear, the feeling of overwhelm every day is hard to overcome. It’s often why people ask me about creating a capsule wardrobe. I get the attraction – imagine having a smaller collection of clothes, which can be worn in multiple ways to create more outfits. Yet, the fear of not having ‘enough’ clothes often stops them. But how do you measure too much? Everyone is different which is why I don’t believe in setting a number on how many clothes you must have. It’s pointless in my view! What you need depends upon how you spend your time, what your style preferences are and of course your budget. Know what suits you and you’re half way there to building that sustainable wardrobe. All you have to do is take the steps to create it.

Learn your colours by booking a colour analysis consultation.

WIll you tell me to wear bright colours?

Firstly, it’s not for me to tell you what to wear! I’m not your mother and you’ve made a decision to come for advice. My aim is to arm you with the right information so that you can put it into practice when you leave your session with me.

What many people don’t realise is how many shades of colours there are. Just because it’s a colour, doesn’t mean it has to be bright.

The features of a colour

All colours have features to them and during a colour analysis consultation, I’ll explain more about colour theory and the Munsell System which I use in my colour consultations.

Colours which compliment your features and characteristics will naturally brighten your overall look. You’ll look healthier and your eyes will brighten. Dark shadows, discolouration or those that wash you out aren’t complimenting your features and don’t bring out the best of you. In simple terms, this is the impact of a colour against your features and it can be good, or not quite so good.

The combinations of colours together can also change the impact and appearance of the colour.

Take this example.

A light and a dark colour together such as black and white, will create a high level of contrast between the two shades.

Whereas if you ‘dull’ the shades down slightly making them off-white and grey, the contrast will be less severe and less harsh. There will be less contrast between the light and dark shade.

Some people are better suited to having more contrast, others not quite so much.

Your fabric choice can also affect the colour too. Choose something shiny like satin and it will brighten the appearance of the colour because it reflects the light.

Fifty shades of grey

For someone who feels afraid of colour, or that they’ll stand out too much, a colour analysis may feel daunting. It’s worth noting that there isn’t just one shade of neutral either. Fifty shades of grey there may be, but have you ever tried to get the same shade of navy, camel or white??

Within everyone’s palette is a range of neutral and a range of colours. By understanding the fundamentals of how colour is made up and how this refers and impacts on your own characteristics, you can use this understanding to make better buying decisions.

The consultation and swatches

A basic colour analysis assess your core, or dominant colouring type and you’ll take away 30 shades of colour most suited to you based upon your core features.

However, this is refined even further during the Complete Colour Analysis consultation. Your sub-dominant colouring types are analysed (your secondary and tertiary types) which takes you to 48 shades in your swatches. The range of colours included will have different elements and features which harmonise with you and who you are.

Yes, there may be brighter shades than others but ultimately, it’s all about how you wear them. That’s what you’ll learn during your colour analysis consultation.

My services are an investment in yourself after all.

4 things to pack for a beach holiday

Holiday season is here but are you a regular over-packer?

Do you tend to panic pack last minute items ‘just in case’?

The key to successful holiday packing is to pack items which are inter-changeable which you can use in multiple ways. This way, you’ll actually take less away with you but still have enough outfits to wear.

There’s a short video you can watch on my YouTube here: https://youtu.be/4Z7rInRSDbI

Here’s the four items:

1. Use your travel bag as a beach bag (or vice versa).

2. A pashmina (or large scarf) is easily reached for when it’s chilly on the plane or an evening. But, why use it as a sarong for the beach or pool? The one featured in the video is a Colour me Beautiful super soft scarf. One is included with my colour analysis consultations but they can be bought from the studio or online here.

3. A shirt or shirt dress can be worn to the beach, pool or on an evening. Wear it as a dress, with or without a belt or try as a lightweight jacket if it’s chilly in the evening as an extra layer.

4. A kaftan might be an obvious choice as a bikini cover up but you can totally dress it up for an evening out. In the video you’ll see me wearing one in the day and the same on a night.

That’s four interchangeable pieces to take away with you on a beach holiday which can be worn in more than one way!

Which will you try?

Tips on choosing swimwear

When it comes to choosing swimwear, here’s a few tips to help guide you just in time for your summer holiday.

Busts and Tummy

If you’re big busted, a good strap will give you a better shape and is far more comfortable to wear. Choosing one for your bra size will also ensure you have the support you need.

Are you conscious about your tummy? A double mesh panel will smooth out this area and give the appearance of a flatter stomach. A print will distract the eye and your tummy magically disappears! Much more flattering than a block colour. Go for a v neck or cross over style which can emphasise a bust and help detract attention away from your tummy area.

The swimsuit featured is from Pour Moi who have a great range of inclusive sizes.

Short legs & long bodies

If you want to elongate your legs, try and avoid shorts style and those that sit at the top of your thigh. Look for high cuts that will give you appearance of length in the leg. Be careful if you’re pear shaped as this can emphasise your wider hips.

Go for styles with detail on the top half to draw attention upwards. The stripes on the one featured are both confusing and interesting, so automatically the eye is drawn upwards.

If you’re longer in the body, you’ll already know that swimsuits can be uncomfortable. Opt for tankinis and bikinis. Make sure you have detail below the bust which will have the effect of lifting the natural waist line.

These are from Next who have a good range but feature more brands online.

Colour

Finally, opt for a flattering shade rather than black which can get very hot in the sun. Go for a cheerful and uplifting colour instead!

Try not to get daunted when shopping for swimwear. Shop by style personality, in colours and styles which flatter your features and you’ll be sure to make the right choices.

How to choose a handbag

If you’re thinking of getting a new handbag for the summer, I’m sharing a few tips on what to consider .

Colour

If you’ve had your colours done, use your swatches as a guide to shopping for a new colour to add to your wardrobe. Worth noting that because this won’t be worn close to your face, it also gives you an opportunity to wear a colour which might not be one of your best! There’s lots of lime again this season and if it’s not your most flattering, choosing a bag is a great way to wear a trending colour.

Choosing a versatile colour could also mean it goes with more of your items. A neutral colour can be versatile but so can metallic and I often find the metallic tones will work with multiple colours and styles too.

Size

Whilst big bags aren’t for everyone, neither are tiny ones. It’s all down to knowing your scale and choosing a size of bag which is not just practical for what you want it for, but also which flatters your frame.

Generally speaking, a small bag will look more balanced on a smaller or petite frame and conversely, a larger bag will look better on a larger frame.

Tummy

Recently, I’ve had a lot of ladies who are conscious of not drawing attention to their tummy area. During a style and image consultation recently, I was able to demonstrate how wearing and positioning a cross body bag to cover up this area can be a clever trick. Bulkier designs can actually draw attention to the area if you’re wanting to hide it.

A traditional handbag with grab handles and carried will draw the eye down and away from your tummy area too.

Hips

If you are wider in the hips as many pear-shaped, or are conscious of your hip area, try and avoid shoulder bags that finish at your widest point. Look for a bag with shorter straps so that it finishes under your arm. You could try and reposition the bag such as across the tummy too. This along with the way that you dress, will help to balance out your frame.

Tall

You can use texture and print to break up your long, lean look. A crossbody can help to visually break up the length of an area too.

Big bust

Short straps and cross body bags can both emphasis the bust area. Choose a long strap to draw the eye away from your chest area, as will a grab handle bag.

Style

Whilst I’ve discussed lots of clever tricks above, your style personality will ultimately be the overriding factor. I’ve had a few naturals in the studio recently and even with the tips here, it’s about choosing what works for you. For example, a natural may prefer the ease and practicality of a cross body bag. But, they may have a big bust and wide hips where this style wouldn’t be the best. However, if they cleverly and strategically place the bag, they could make it work (such as moving to the front so it wasn’t resting on their hip and making sure the strap didn’t sit between the girls.

There are so many styles out there and available so focus on what works for your style first then narrow down to the right colour for you and then any tricks you need to make.

It’s all about understanding what works for you! You’ll learn many tips during a style and image consultation and appointments are available Monday to Saturday and last around 2 hours.

Does having a tan change your colouring type?

This is a common question which comes up, especially around the holiday season and summer time.

The short answer is; no. Your colouring type won’t change if you have a tan. This is the case whether you had a seasonal analysis or a tonal analysis consultation.

Let me expand further.

Your colouring is ultimately determined by your genetics, so will remain broadly unchanged in the event of a tan.

As you gain more colour to your skin, it will add more of a ‘glow’ to your facial features. This isn’t permanent but you will find that some colours begin to look much better against your skin than when you were paler by comparison.

Many people tend to reach for brighter or more vibrant colours in sunnier times. This is more of a psychological effect of the brighter sunnier days impacting how we feel and wearing brighter, sunnier looking clothes.

Having a tan will likely mean that you need to change your foundation shade. You may also feel that you don’t require as much coverage as you normally would without a tan.

Unless your tan is fake, it really won’t affect your colouring type. Fake tan tends to be warm/yellow toned which can therefore dramatically change the appearance of your actual skin tone, even if you are cool toned.

Either way, don’t let having a tan put you off booking a colour consultation to learn your best shades of colour.

Spring 2023 Spotlight trend: denim and how to wear it

If you’ve been shopping, you’ll have noticed new colours and styles for spring and summer. We just need the weather!

Whilst I shared this trend during my live workshop in April, One trend I wanted to spotlight this spring is denim and how to wear it.

Firstly, think beyond jeans! One of the biggest complaints I get from clients is how fed up they are of wearing jeans! This year, denim has been reinvented! Skirts, dresses, jackets, shirts and more. Different styles, cuts, patterns and washes. Try something different – like a denim dress!

In this video, I’m sharing a denim dress which totally ticks the spring 2023 trend:

Watch it here on YouTube.

Would it surprise you to learn that this was a charity shop find? (Wakefield Hospice, The Ridings Shopping Centre, Wakefield).

It’s totally ‘on trend’ right??

Which proves the point I’m always making. Trends come and go. Be sure to check your wardrobe for something similar to the latest trends (in which case; get it worn!). Charity shops can be a great place to shop!

Here’s three considerations when shopping for denim:

1. Think about your style personality

Naturals like me, can be drawn to the ease and simplicity of denim. But, do think outside the box and try it on for ease of movement. Denim nowadays is more modern and there are different weights of denim fabric too. The dress I’ve highlighted is a much lighter weight fabric and it has pockets! Go for something that works for your style personality. For example, romantics will be drawn to embroidery, lace or jewel embellishment details. The Classics will prefer a plain item so try something like a smart denim jacket. There’s coloured and traditional denim in the shops in abundance too.

2. Think about your colouring

The lighter wash of the denim dress mans it’s perfect for lights and softs. It will work for warms (you’re best ‘warming up’ your denim and neutrals or look for a colour such as a khaki denim jacket which will give you versatility). Cools, clears and deeps will be better suited to a darker wash.

3. Think about your body shape

Denim is a structured fabric and has a tendency to sit off curves. This dress has a waistband sewn in to provide some shape and darts to create shape. Plus the material is a much lighter weight version so it’s got more movement than a traditional, heavier weight denim. This can be a great option for straight body shapes. However, if you are curvier, look for styles that follow your shape (ie. go in at the waist). Some give will be best so make sure you have some elastane and stretch in your denim or a chambray style of fabric. You could even opt for a belted shacket-style with a soft belt.

Staying up to date

As I said, trends come and go. Just because something is fashion or on trend, does not mean it will work for you. Learn what does suit you and you’ll look and feel great!

If you missed my spring/summer update, the guide featured in the video, the E-book and my recorded video masterclass are all available online until 30 September. These show you some of the colours and styles that you can find to help give you some guidance this spring/summer. Visit my shop online here.

Toni in action! Groups, talks and presentations

Lately, I’ve found myself on the road!

Colour and style consultations continue to take place in the studio in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. People travel locally as well as from further afield. Having trained with Colour me Beautiful over 10 years ago, I’m still the only colour me beautiful consultant in Wakefield!

You’d expect me to travel for wardrobe audits and shopping trips after all – you can’t be expected to bring your entire wardrobe to me!

Over the last few months I’ve found myself travelling more and more. Mainly for group workshops and parties, but there’s also been some speaking and presentations too.

Talks and presentations

Just recently, I was invited back to the MY Breast Cancer Support group for a wellness day.

It’s always a privilege to speak to these ladies, many of whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for years now.

Perhaps it’s down to my corporate career and background, but I’ve been able to deliver different talks and formats to different groups.

For this particular group, it was fairly informal and I simply answered a multitude of style, colour, wardrobe and dressing questions that the ladies had. It went well I’m told as the ladies still can’t stop talking about the hints and tips I shared which is always lovely to hear.

You can see here that I was caught mid flow whilst showing the ladies my colour swatch wallet! For anyone who has been recently diagnosed or affected with breast cancer in the mid Yorkshire region, support is available. Wellness days, prehab and rehab and I’d be happy to put anyone in touch with the group organiser.

Another local event; this time I was invited to present to the members at Vino & Stitch WI Methley. A wonderful, engaging and welcoming group who have recently celebrated their 10 year membership with the WI.

My presentation was about colour and I showed the members how to wear colour for best effect.

Another success I’m told as they were amazed at what they learnt in so little time and how to make the most of what they wear.

They’re always on the lookout for new members and meet at the Rivers Meet Cafe in Methley. It’s a great venue (and cake) as I use it for my mini colour taster workshops.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the WI group, I’d be happy to put you in touch.

Group sessions

You can always organise a session for your own group. Always good fun, these take place at a venue of your choosing and are a great way to share the experience with friends or family. Perfect if you’re looking for something more detailed than a talk or presentation where everyone can get involved.

If you’re happy to join a group workshop, my next colour workshop has been booked and takes place on Saturday 23 September. It takes place at Rivers MEET cafe and includes cake, refreshments and a colour card. Tickets aren’t on sale just yet but get in touch to pre-book your place: Toni.carver@tlcstyleandcolour.co.uk.

Will my colouring type change?

I’m often asked if you can change palettes over the years, or whether you’ll stay the same colouring type from your initial analysis.

The short answer – it depends on various factors.

So, here’s the long answer and the circumstances which can affect your palette and therefore, your colouring type.

Hair colour changes

If you invested in a colour analysis many years ago, the first thing to consider is whether the same colours still flatter your physical features or if they look a bit ‘off’.

In my experience, it’s likely to be a change in your physical appearance. I see so many ladies who might have been analysed when they had dark brown hair initially and years later, have lightened their hair or gone au natural.

The impact of such a dramatic change in hair colour (and therefore physical appearance) will mean the harmony between your features and the colours you wear will change. Stronger, richer or bolder colours may be too overwhelming for your more delicate or softer appearance.

Let’s say you were mousey or fair haired and now have a more striking red and auburn tones to your hair. The muted colours of previous may well not have enough ‘bite’ or drama for you. (And, I’m guessing you probably stopped using your swatches some time ago!)

Having worked with some cancer patients over the years, a result can often be hair loss. Many have found that their hair grows back very differently! This may result in a dramatic change to your appearance and therefore an impact on the colours that once loved you, might not love you the same now.

A side note on makeup. Choose the wrong shade of lipstick or even blusher and nothing you wear will look quite right! Don’t forget to review your makeup colours when you review the colours that you wear. If you do want a makeup refresh, get in touch to arrange your appointment.

You were analysed as a ‘season’

This comes up fairly frequently. Many people first had their colours analysed decades ago when colour analysis first appeared in the UK from the US.

Having been previously analysed as a season, they’ve come for an update as they felt their colours weren’t working for them anymore. Initially I was analysed as a ‘summer’ and had 33 coloured swatches in my wallet. The majority suited me well but there were a handful of them which I felt rather washed out in. I didn’t regret the analysis at all, just felt that it wasn’t quite as refined as it could be for me. At the time, seasonal analysis was the only method available. Over the years, things have advanced and changed and other methods of colour analysis exist.

Tonal analysis

The four seasonal approach (spring, summer, autumn, winter) can be restrictive if you don’t fit neatly into the one season (like me as a ‘summer’). The tonal system, (used in my colour analysis consultations) is much more flexible and more refined to you.

Based upon the Albert Munsell Colour Theory and the combination of your current hair colour, eye colour and skin-tone. It assesses the shades of colours most suited to you using the value, clarity and hue of your features and colours to determine the shades which will flatter you the most. It’s a 24-palette system designed to be more reflective of you and your features.

Colouring change examples

I don’t have photographic evidence of every client transformation but I do have lots of examples! Some clients aren’t comfortable or happy having their photo taken and shared with the world which I totally respect.

Here’s a few examples I do have to share.

Carol was a ‘spring’ and got in touch as her hair colour had changed. When wearing her ‘best’ colours, she found that they just weren’t flattering for her now.

After a re-assessment, she was a wonderful ‘cool’ and she set about tackling her wardrobe creating new combinations.

She even found things in her wardrobe which she’d not worn as a spring’ but now found they flattered her perfectly.

You may recognise this chap!

Cliff Bashforth is the MD of Colour me Beautiful and has moved from a Soft & Warm palette and now to a Cool & Soft one. His transition has been subtle and occurred over ..ahem..many years. It’s something I see frequently with clients as they age naturally.

I’ve written about Debbie in the past. She’d previously been analysed as a soft, warm and light colouring type and having found certain shades in her palette weren’t working, she came to see me for a colour review.

She’d changed to warm, soft and deep colouring type instead. She’d been blonder and lighter during her previous colour analysis and her hair was more golden which meant a shift in her dominant colouring type (soft to warm) as well as her sub-dominants (warm & light to soft & deep). You can read more and revisit the blog here.

Last but not least, two sisters. Chris and Gill came to see me for a review as part of a birthday celebration! Chris’s colouring type had changed slightly, but Gill’s really hadn’t much. Chris was previously a light, cool & soft and a decade on, had changed slightly. She was now a soft, cool & light which she felt much happier with. Gill on the other hand remained a soft, warm & light. Whilst her features had softened slightly, her colour palette still worked and suited her.

These examples illustrate some of the scenarios when your colouring type or colour palette may well change.

So, if you find that your colours are starting to look a little ‘off’, it may be time for a colour review.

Colour Reviews and Colour Analysis

There are many benefits to a colour analysis consultation, whether you’ve had one in the past or this is your first discovery. I’ve covered six benefits here.

Colour Reviews are aimed at those who have been analysed before and would like re-assessing to determine if their colouring type has changed. A colour review is only available to my previous clients who have been fully analysed by me.

For those who are unfamiliar with the tonal colour analysis system or never had their colours analysed before, there are various colour analysis options available. Simply visit this page for full details.

You’ll gain a greater understanding of the impact of colour, learn your colouring type and how to wear colour.

Replacement wallet covers, fabric and digital swatches are available without an appointment here.
